In kindergarten through 5th grade, we have been learning different communication styles. We have identified that being passive or being aggressive is not an effective way to communicate, and have discussed what it looks and sounds like to be assertive instead.
Today, was a special day at English Landing. The school staff trained our student leaders so that they can start their important new jobs next week. We will have students leading at the car lanes, front entrance, recess and lunch. These are just a few example of the thirty leadership roles students will be tackling in the weeks ahead. We believe every student can learn the habits of an effective leader. Stephen Covey, author of Seven Habits of Highly Happy Kids, compiled a list of leadership qualities that we work to instill in our students at English Landing.
1. Be proactive.
2. Begin with the end in mind.
3. Put first things first.
4. Think win-win.
5. Seek first to understand and then to be understood.
7. Sharpen the saw.
It's easy to say, "I will be better at listening," or "I will stick up for myself," but harder to know the specific steps for making a change. We are excited to focus on helping our students set SMART goals so that they have a clear roadmap to improve themselves!

We hope to help our students set and share their goals using this bulletin board! Come take a look!
We can't wait to fill our balloons with goals. We even set one of our own!
